INTRODUCTION TO THE GREAT LAKES OF KISUMU (GLUK)’s PhD CHD PROGRAMME

THE GOAL OF GLUK PhD COMMUNITY HEALTH and DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The program is designed to produce leaders who are professional and academicians with advanced knowledge and specialized skills for solving critical problems through research and innovation in health and development, with capacity to mentor young researchers.

 

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAMME

 

By the end of the PhD CHD programme, the student will be able to:

1.      Demonstrate a broad knowledge of Community Health and Development and a systematic understanding of the research area, together with detailed and current specialist knowledge within a defined part of the research area.

2.      Demonstrate an ability to critically, independently, creatively and with scholarly precision identify and formulate issues; to plan and, using appropriate methods, conduct research and other advanced tasks within specified time limits, and to examine and evaluate such work.

3.      Demonstrate, in a thesis/dissertation, their ability to make a substantial contribution to the development of knowledge through their own research.

4.      Demonstrate ability, in both national and international contexts, orally and in writing, to present and discuss research and research results with authority in dialogue with the scholarly community and society in general.

5.      Demonstrate intellectual independence and scholarly integrity, as well as an ability to make ethical assessments relating to research.

6.      Demonstrate understanding of the economic and social determinants of fertility, mortality and migration, and the effects of these population variables on economic and social conditions, including economic and social development.

7.      Demonstrate understanding of the relevance of international health partnerships and governance to international disease prevention and control.

8.      Analyze strategies for health systems improvement through public policy.


COURSE OUTLINES

 

THE CONCEPT PAPER   – structure

Before you develop your concept paper, you will need to be familiar with accessing databases and downloading journal articles, know how to use reference management software such as Zotero or Mendeley. 

Give a working title that describes the nature of your project. It may be useful to indicate, after a colon, the nature of the study or your approach.

2)      Background and introduction relating to the problem of study

3)      Area of study

4)      Problem statement

5)      Review of literature and relevant practice

6)      Methodology/ Approach

Identify goals and milestones and estimate time required to complete each chapter/component of practical work /aspect of fieldwork, etc.

7)      References

List all publications cited in your proposal. It is best to get into the habit of using a standard referencing system. GLUK prescribes to APA (American Psychological Association) style for writing references, so that material can be transferred into your thesis. Do not cite from memory without referencing.
